Wiper is a popular party in Ukambani region, and the vehicle (Mutua) used to win the governor’s seat. However, Mutua no longer agrees with the ideologies or leaders of Wiper, and key in point is Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka. Instead, Mutua has openly defied directions from the party and even gone ahead to form Maendeleo Chap Chap Movement, which he maintains is a movement and not a party.
Mutua’s Deputy Benard Kiala has said he will run for the seat of Governor. Kiala has labelled Mutua as corrupt and said he will run against his boss. Kiala’s case is unique in Kenya as he is one deputy governor who has faced an impeachment motion by the County Assembly of Machakos that was overturned by the Senate. He has also been summoned by the EACC.
The Deputy Governor’s drive and determination has attracted his way friends and foes in equal measure, but what he has been garnering with his trademark #UgatuziNaKiala is more followers of late.
Opinion leaders, residents and some elected leaders say the only way of beating Governor Alfred Mutua is by ensuring there is only one political force challenging him, and KIALA is seen by most Ukambani leaders as that force. If the leaders, led by Senator Muthama agree to uniformly support KIALA for the seat, then Mutua will be in problems, Kiala can and will clinch the seat
The reason the deputy governor is seen as the best bet by many is because of is character attributes.
